{"id":1021,"date":"2022-09-01T20:11:12","date_gmt":"2022-09-01T20:11:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/work.creativamotions.com\/flavorlab\/?p=1021"},"modified":"2025-04-02T23:06:08","modified_gmt":"2025-04-02T23:06:08","slug":"the-nathaniel-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/work.creativamotions.com\/flavorlab\/the-nathaniel-project\/","title":{"rendered":"The Nathaniel Project"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><center><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\" lazyloaded\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/742363735?h=3737254e4f\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/center><\/p>\n<h5 id=\"h-the-nathaniel-project-mutual-of-america-s-2021-community-partnership-award-winner\" class=\"has-text-align-center\" style=\"text-align: center;\">THE NATHANIEL PROJECT, MUTUAL OF AMERICA\u2019S 2021 COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIP AWARD WINNER<\/h5>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Last year,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.flavorlab.com\/score\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Erik Blicker and Glenn Schloss<\/a>\u00a0once again teamed up with Jeff Schwartz of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.primalux.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Primalux Video<\/a>\u00a0for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/2021communitypartnershipaward.mutualofamerica.com\/award-winners\/nathaniel-project\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mutual of America\u2019s Community Partnership Award<\/a>\u00a0video. In 2021, that prize went to New York City\u2019s own\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cases.org\/nathaniel-act\/#!\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nathaniel Project<\/a>. Launched in 2000 by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cases.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Center for Alternative Sentencing &amp; Employment Services (CASES)<\/a>, the alternative-to-incarceration program (ATI) serves people with serious mental illness facing prison time for felony charges. For decades, the incarceration system in the United States has served as a last resort for individuals with mental illness. There are more people living with serious mental illness detained in jails and prisons than being served in psychiatric treatment centers. With little access to mental health services in their communities, resources only lessen once detained.<\/p>\n<p><center>As a result, prison is often an especially traumatic experience, with many individuals experiencing increased violence behind bars. Upon release, they struggle to land on their feet and recidivism amongst people with mental illness is high. Working with the city and the courts, The Nathaniel Project identifies people indicating psychiatric distress. CASES works with the client and their defense attorney, develops a treatment and community reintegration plan, and defers sentencing pending a 2-to-3 year treatment period. With specialists ranging from medication, to housing, to employment, and more, CASES\u2019 state-licensed Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) team starts work with the client.<\/center><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"has-text-align-center\" style=\"text-align: center;\">\u201cThey mention showing the world \u2018the person behind the person\u2019 through this program, which I loved. We often say we\u2019re writing \u2018the story behind the story\u2019 when we score. Pulling that person out, that \u2018light in darkness\u2019 theme, was paramount.\u201d<\/h4>\n<h4 class=\"has-text-align-center\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Erik Blicker, composer<\/em><\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Jeff started, as he usually does, with pre-interviews with members of the organization via Zoom. With CASES in New York, travel wasn\u2019t as much of a factor,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.flavorlab.com\/100-scholars-robotics-alliance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">as with 2020\u2019s organization<\/a>. That being said, due to COVID restrictions and case numbers in the city\u2019s prison system, setting interview times was the main challenge. As production was finally wrapping in late September, Jeff took an initial theme idea to Flavorlab Score. \u201cThe vision of the organization focuses on that light of a brighter day. A future where these people live their best lives and through public health we achieve public safety,\u201d explains Jeff. \u201cBut they start out in really compounding dark places. Mentally in turmoil, in need of meds, facing imprisonment, so that light in darkness had to be our theme.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><center>Drawing on some of the benefits of last year\u2019s remote sessions, Glenn and Erik cut together a demo for Jeff to cut to in post. Later that fall, the three reunited to record. \u201cI could really leave it in their hands, but being with them is too much fun,\u201d explains Jeff. \u201cIt was a blessing being in the room together again,\u201d echoes Glenn. The homecoming for the trio started with honing the reggae sound. They miked up the kit to get the right thump, utilizing plenty of SM57s, added in some nylon guitar, and brought in Judd Nielsen to lay down the bass. With the instrumental set, powerhouse vocalist\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.keithanthonyfluitt.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Keith Fluitt<\/a>\u00a0laid down the top line. Long time collaborator and Bruce Springsteen backing vocalist,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/cindymizelle\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cindy Mizelle<\/a>, joined in on harmony.\u00a0<\/center>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><center>Adding the final flourish, audio engineer Eric Stern sound designed the tick of a prison cell door into the snare.
