Guided by an experienced professor, you’ll learn the foundations of quantitative research, including: how to distinguish between different research methodologies, how to collect and organize data, and how to engage in statistical analysis. Once you’ve learned these core concepts, you’ll work directly with a PhD mentor who will assist you in conducting research on a topic of your own choosing. and ultimately produce your own long-form research paper. By the end of the program, you will complete your own research paper.
To give a brief overview, quantitative research involves dealing with numbers and data that can be counted in some way. This type of work is objective, and there is some distance between the researcher and the participants. It involves testing hypotheses and predicting outcomes. The data gathered is based on numbers and large quantities of data can be analyzed. The work is usually quite structured, often involving experiments, and results are examined using statistical analysis. This type of research is used in maths and the sciences, but it’s also used sometimes in the social sciences.
