Why Participate

Multiple college admissions outlets report that students who conduct research during high school increase their chances of college admissions, particularly to the most competitive university programs. What’s more, research gives you the opportunity to express your creativity in exploring problems in new ways, strengthens your critical thinking ability, and exposes you to potential career options.

Above all, personal benefits that accompany high school research programs beyond additional success in college admissions include personal growth, intellectual development, and the opportunity for individualized mentorships. The benefits of participating in a Pagoda Research program are both immediate and enduring.

Student FAQ

Students who wish to participate in Pagoda Research must be prepared to conduct intensive research over the course of 10 weeks with the ultimate goal of completing a 20-25 page research project. In order to gain successful admission to the program, students must demonstrate a high level of academic achievement as well as proven interest in their desired field of study. As a part of their application, students must submit their high school transcript, standardized test scores, and short essay responses.

For students whose primary language of instruction is not English, proof of English language proficiency will be required. Only TOEFL scores of 100+ will be considered.

The application deadline for our 2021 summer cohorts is June 1st. After a student has submitted their application, our admissions panel will review each student profile to assess whether or not we determine they are sufficiently equipped to complete a rigorous research project. Candidates will be informed within two weeks as to whether or not they have been accepted into the program.

The program will begin June 26 and conclude on August 4.

During this time, students will attend weekly seminars led by professors, workshops guided by PhD mentors, as well as engage in their own independent readings and research.

Live virtual seminars and workshops will be hosted via Zoom.

All of the course content and syllabus will be made available through our academics portal that will include a schedule of meetings and times.

Our programs are structured to allow students to cultivate a range of soft and hard skill sets that can support their success in the future. That includes:

  • Developing analytical writing skills through the completion of a long research paper (20-30 pages)
  • Better perspective on their prospective majors and potential career options
  • Synthesizing both qualitative and quantitative data
  • Ability to work on long term projects and improving time management
  • Becoming critical thinkers, change makers, and thought leaders on academically challenging subjects

Successfully completing a research paper is an achievement in and of itself. Students of course retain the rights to their final work and are encouraged to use it to enrich their academic resumes.

Here are some ways students can leverage their Pagoda Research project:

  1. Submit your paper to eligible journals and/or publications
  2. Publish your research on your own personal website or blog
  3. Include your research abstract and links to your work in your university applications

No. The purpose of the program is to make university-level research methods available to high school students who otherwise wouldn’t have the opportunity to engage in such deep and intensive study. We do not expect you to have completed previous research projects; we simply ask that you are prepared to put in the work!

Although there is no firm cut-off for grade level participation, most of our students are between Grades 10-12. The most significant determining factor in a student’s success, however, is their intellectual curiosity. If you are passionate about a subject and are committed to putting the hours of work into reading academic journals, developing a research model, and presenting your conclusions in a well-constructed final paper, you will be set up for success.

Mentor FAQ

Our programs require relatively little time commitment for mentors, who reap the rewards of bringing their students through the research process. Mentors are expected to meet with students for about one hour for each of the ten sessions of the program, in addition to providing written feedback and editing on the content of their mentees’ projects.

We will contact you if we think we’ve found a student who matches with your academic expertise and background. We then will schedule a video call where you meet your prospective mentee to confirm that you will be matches for each other.

Mentors are provided a fixed, competitive rate for their participation in the program based on the number of students they advise. If you’d like more information before applying, please reach out to us for further details.

Pagoda has an online platform where you can access video calls. We ask that mentors and mentees work together to find which weekly time slots will work best for both parties.

Absolutely. We screen for high-caliber students with a track record for academic and extra-curri ular excellence. We are confident that with proper guidance, our students will be proud of their final research projects at the end of the program. Students with outstanding projects will be conferred the opportunity to publish their work in the Pagoda Research Journal.

No—the team at Pagoda will field all parent inquiries. We have a system in place where we can review students progress and communicate with parents on behalf of mentors.
